beauty from ashes...

February 17, 2012

Isaiah 61:3 to grant to those who morn in Zion-to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of morning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit…

God is so much bigger than any box we can put Him in. Still we try. We call Him loving—which He is, but He is so much more. Some call Him fearsome—which He is, but still He is so much more. He is all of those things and more put together in a way our human minds cannot comprehend. For some this is unacceptable, that there would be something we could not understand; so they deny His existence or His power. Though we may not understand Him, we can take comfort in knowing that if you are His, He takes care of you. I love this verse; I was reminded of it this past Sunday, and it brings me great comfort. Just like we cannot understand God; we sometimes can’t understand why things happen to us. Yet, this verse is clear that God desires to grow us, to make us more than we are. He takes the things that hurt us and makes them better. Having seen this in my life it is amazing how this happens. God doesn’t desire us to live lives that are painful; He desires us to live lives that honor Him. Only He can make beauty from ashes.
